A fire broke out at the historic cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France.
Around 400 firefighters battled the raging flames, with Parisians and tourists gasping in horror
The church’s spire fell, followed by the collapse of the roof
French president Emmanuel Macron tweeting “Notre Dame of Paris in flames. Emotion for a whole nation. Thoughts for all Catholics and for all French. Like all our countrymen, I’m sad tonight to see this part of us burn.”
The Paris prosecutor has opened an investigation into the fire
The cathedral was built in the 13th century and is one of the most well-known places of worship in the world, bringing around 13 million visitors every year
Much of the cathedral was covered in scaffolding, as Notre Dame was undergoing renovations.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but the damage it caused is extensive.
However, authorities believe much of the structure is still in tact.
President Macron also vows to rebuild the site.
