The Massachusetts teen who urged her boyfriend through text messages to kill himself will begin serving her 15-month jail sentence immediately.
Prosecutors say Michelle Carter was 17 when she encouraged 18-year-old Conrad Roy the third to take his own life in 2014.
Roy died after inhaling carbon monoxide in his pickup truck.
Carter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in juvenile court in in 2017 and sentenced to 15 months in prison.
Her attorneys appealed the verdict, putting that sentence on hold.
They argued that her text messages to roy were constitutionally-protected free speech and not illegal.
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled last week carter’s actions were a crime and ordered her to serve her time.
