In Myanmar, two Reuters journalists jailed for more than 500 days are now free.
The men walked out of a prison outside Yangon Tuesday, without explanation from the government.
Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were convicted in September of violating the official secrets act and sentenced to seven years behind bars.
The case raised questions about Myanmar’s progress towards democracy and sparked an outcry from diplomats and human rights advocates.
In a statement early this morning, Myanmar’s president said they country will release over 6-thousand prisoners in an an official pardon.
Reuters editor-in-chief Stephen Alder says quote, “we are enormously pleased that Myramar has released our courageous reporters.”
Reuters have called for their release, maintaining their innocence.
