California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for a hold on horse racing at Santa Anita Park after 29 horses have died so far this season.
Horse racing officials are expected to unveil increased involvement of independent veterinarians on Wednesday.
Newsom wants all horses to be examined before the race.
Independent vets already examine horses several times before they hit the track, so it’s not clear what the increased involvement will look like.
The state racing horse board asked the track to suspend the rest of its season, but it refused to do so.
