The Houston Rockets train Monday in Tokyo amid controversy about the Hong Kong pro- democracy protest support shared by their manager.
China’s basketball association says it has severed ties with the Houston Rockets team after their general manager, Daryl Morey, tweeted support for the protesters on Friday.
Morey has since deleted the tweet, and both he and the league have apologized, but now, they’re facing criticism from U.S. lawmakers for backing down.
The controversy has also surrounded Rockets players — including James Harden — who apologized to reporters in Tokyo on Monday.
The Rockets are one of the most popular N.B.A. teams in China.
