A major power outage hit New York City Saturday night after what authorities say was an equipment failure at an electrical substation.
At one point, some 73-thousand customers were without power in Manhattan, primarily north of Times Square.
Police and fire authorities reported rescuing dozens of people from elevators, but there were no reports of injuries or fatalities.
New York Governor Cuomo said a transformer fire started a chain reaction generating a surge of power that put out as many as five additional sub-stations.
The outage darkened much of Broadway and portions of the cities subway system.
A Jennifer Lopez concert at madison square garden was canceled after most of the lights there went off just minutes into the show.
