Sunfield Woman Arrested After Passing Contraband Inmate
A Sunfield woman has been arrested after passing a contraband item to an inmate during visitation.
On February 16 in 2020 troopers from the Michigan State Police Cadillac Post were called to the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee to investigate 46-year-old Melanie Ann Turo, who had allegedly passed contraband to an inmate during visitation.
Turo was visiting a family member when she was seen passing an item to the inmate. When confronted by a correction officer, the inmate ran down the hall and digested the item. Turo was detained and interviewed by troopers.
Despite Turo denying passing anything to the inmate, surveillance footage was reviewed, and a search warrant was conducted at the motel she was staying at.
Troopers seized numerous bags of balloons, small balloons packed with suspected methamphetamine, cash, cell phones, SIM cards, and a record book containing inmate information.
In December, an arrest warrant was authorized for Turo. She was arrested on Monday during a traffic stop and lodged in the Manistee County Jail.
Turo was arraigned on Tuesday in Manistee County for one count Possession Methamphetamine and one count Possession Analogues. Her bond was set at $5,000 and her next scheduled court appearance is on May 11 at 1:30 p.m.
