European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced EU plans to significantly reduce gas imports from Russia.

Von der Leyen said that she will meet with US President Joe Biden on Thursday to discuss the possibility to secure extra deliveries of liquefied natural gas from the U.S. for the 27-nation bloc.

The EU imports 90% of the natural gas that is used to generate electricity and heat homes, and Russia supplies almost 40% of EU gas and a quarter of its oil.

The bloc is looking towards ways to reduce its dependency on Russia by diversifying suppliers. Von der Leyen said the EU is aiming at having a commitment for additional supplies from the U.S. “for the next two winters.”

She also condemned the effects of the war on food supplies and urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to let ships full of wheat freely navigate in the Black Sea to avoid global famine.
