Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin is calling on China to begin talks with the United States, or face even more tariffs.
Mnuchin made the comments during a meeting with the finance ministers of G20 countries in Japan.
He told reporters that it “would be great” if Beijing came back to the negotiating table, but maintained that china must make good on its commitments.
The Treasury Secretary is set to meet face to face with the governor of China’s central bank Sunday.
That will be the first meeting of high-level trade officials since failed talks resulted in an increase of tariffs last month.
Mnuchin blames that failure on the Chinese negotiators.
President Trump will also meet with Chinese president Xi Jinping at the G20 summit later this month.
Mnuchin says the outcome of that meeting will be vital to determining the future of the ongoing trade war.
