Virus Variants May Impact Test Results
New variants COVID-19 may have a small impact on test results.
Authorized SARS-CoV-2 molecular tests may have false negative results as a result of virtual mutations according to an alert sent out to medical experts by the Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA believes the risk that these mutations will impact overall testing accuracy is low and say they will continue to monitor known variants such as the United Kingdom mutation discovered in late 2020.
In a statement the food and drug administration says variants are common.
“The SARS-CoV-2 virus can mutate over time, like all viruses, resulting in genetic variation in the population of circulating viral strains”
